A fine win for the Ely team, in spite of being out-graded on three of the four boards.

Board 4 was the first to finish. Stephen Pride of the Academicals had apparently overlooked a key move earlier in the game, but he managed to recover and get a draw in a rook ending against Mike.

On Board 3, Chris Davison was pressing hard for a win in a middlegame with queens, rooks and bishops of the same colour, but Mark created a pair of central pawns which stormed down the board to victory.

On board 2, Richard played an impressive King's Indian Attack as White. Gabor lost a pawn and then, as the position got complicated, the game.

On top board, Philip Fallon (playing White) tried to avoid Martyn's preparation by deliberately staying out of book. But the result was a queenless middlegame in which Black had an ongoing edge and all the practical chances.  However, Martyn overpressed when it would have been better to continue to build up his position without risk.  The result was that Philip suddenly won a pawn out of nowhere.  But instead of consolidating he continued in a tactical fashion, which resulted in Martyn being in a position to win a piece.  Fortunately for Philip, he was able to gobble up Martyn's last pawns in return for the piece, and the resulting endgame of Martyn's rook and bare knight against Philip's rook and three pawns was drawn by repetition in the final minutes of the session.
